NHL Free Pick - Surging Sabres welcome Blue Jackets

COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS (2-2-1) AT BUFFALO SABRES (3-2-0), 7:30 P.M.

The Buffalo Sabres will try to extend their three-game winning streak tonight in the conclusion of a four-game homestand, as the club welcomes the Columbus Blue Jackets to HSBC Arena.

After dropping their first two games of the season, the Sabres have bested Atlanta, Washington and Toronto — all at home — to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Buffalo was last in action on Monday, when it defeated the Maple Leafs, 5-4, after Paul Gaustad was credited with a power-play goal with 3.7 seconds remaining in overtime.

Jason Pominville and Jochen Hecht had a goal and an assist each, while Adam Mair and Thomas Vanek also tallied goals for the Sabres. Defenseman Jaroslav Spacek left the game in the third period after taking a hard check against the boards and is questionable tonight with a shoulder injury.

Jocelyn Thibault made his first start in goal for the Sabres and finished with 21 saves. Thibault signed with Buffalo as a free agent this summer after two seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Tim Connolly had a pair of assists in the win, giving him points in four straight games (1 goal, 6 assists). Pominville (3g, 2a) also has points in four consecutive contests.

Following the conclusion of this homestand, the Sabres hit the road for five straight games, beginning in Montreal on Saturday.

The Blue Jackets, meanwhile, will try to halt a two-game losing streak tonight. The club did earn a point last time out, though, as it fell to Dallas, 3-2, in a shootout on Wednesday.

Rick Nash had a goal and an assist in the loss for the Blue Jackets, who are 2-2-1 on the season. Jiri Novotny also scored, while Nikolai Zherdev posted two helpers in the loss.

Fredrik Norrena stopped 28-of-30 shots in the loss, the Blue Jackets’ first at home. The club has yet to win a game on the road this season (0-2) and will be without forward Fredrik Modin (groin) for at least another 7-10 days.

Columbus has killed off 25-of-27 power-play chances, giving them a 92.6 penalty kill percentage on the young season.

The Blue Jackets are 4-2 with a tie all-time versus the Sabres, but have lost two straight in Buffalo.

I’m on the UNDER 6 -125 Money

Good Luck,
